Section Information for Fall 2016

This course will focus on several areas of the "global sports complex," using it as a lens through which we can understand global affairs in their political, cultural, social, and economic aspects and the different disciplinary approaches that we can bring to bear on global issues. We’ll look at the way world sports are run and the role of often unaccountable international organizations in global sports. We’ll take up questions regarding the economics of sports and their related industries —including the involvement of sports in medicine, illegal drug consumption, and the use of sweatshops in the production of athletic goods. We’ll consider the mutually dependent relationship that exists between sports and global media industries. And we’ll talk about sports in relation to individual bodies, including questions of gender, race, sexuality, as well as injury health and disability. The goal will be to get a complete picture of the profound way that global sports impact so many aspects of daily life around the world.
